How to Fire-Proof your Bedroom

Bedrooms are a common place for fires to occur. The reason why fires can occur in the bedroom is usually due to misuse or poor maintenance of electrical devices. This can include, for example, overloading extension cords with too many plugs or using portable heaters that are placed too close to flammable materials. Another cause of bedroom fires are by children who play with matches and lighters and adults who smoke that do not put off their cigarettes in the correct manner. There are however some simple checks you can carry out before you go to bed that will better protect yourself and your home from fire.

Taking the appropriate steps to fireproofing a bedroom can help you and your family stay safe. Unfortunately a large number of home fire deaths are caused by bedroom fires. In order to fireproof this room, it is ideal to ensure all exits are accessible, a fire detection is installed and that the electrical wiring is maintained. In addition, you will need to practice simple fire safety guidelines and make sure the bedroom is set up with a phone, flashlight and a whistle.

So let’s have a look at some tips below, to ensure your bedroom and home remain safe this festive season.

Always install a smoke detector in your home

  • Never smoke in bed particularly when tired or on medication.
  • If you do smoke in the bedroom empty the ashtray when finished.
  • Never use candles if you are likely to fall asleep.
  • Keep candles away from curtains, bedding, clothes, etc.
  • Make sure that candles are only used in proper candle holders.
  • Never use candles as a night light for children. (Use a low watt mains or battery light).
  • Never cover a light to make it dimmer, fit a lower watt bulb.
  • Ensure that all unnecessary electrical appliances are unplugged before going to sleep.
  • Never place a portable heater close to a bed.
  • Always have a torch available in your bedroom for emergencies.
  • Always have a house phone or mobile phone beside the bed in case of an emergency.
  • Never leave your mobile phone charging over night or when you go out.
