Did you know it’s Recycle Week from 20th – 26th September 2021?
On average, only abut 20% of mattresses are recycled with many unfortunately ending up in landfill sites. According to the National Bed Federation (NBF) there was a total of 5.3 million units of mattresses purchased as replacements however less than 20% were actually recycled. As a result, the NBF’s Circular Economy Committee have set out a new target for this number to increase to 75% by 2028.
How often should you change your mattress?
It can be very easy to lose track of how long you have been sleeping on you mattress. If you can’t remember how many years it has been since your purchased your mattress, it may already be time for you to swap it for a new one. Whilst it may still feel comfortable to sleep in, an old mattress will eventually become less supportive as time goes on. Also due to daily use, build up of skin shedding and body fluids can leave the levels of hygiene in your mattress to become quite poor. Therefore it is recommended to replace your mattress every 8 – 10 years
How can I get rid of my mattress?
There are many different ways in which you can dispose of your mattress, from taking it to a tip, at a recycling centre, donating it to a friend or family or having the mattress collected by a profession service. The most popular but more expensive way would be to contact your local council. However there is no guarantee that your item will be recycled. Another alternative is to take your mattress to the local tip. This would mean that you would need a vehicle large enough to fit it in the boot or fastened to the top.
Can the whole mattress be recycled?
Currently it is not possible for all the parts of a mattress to be recycled. When they are taken to a recycling facility, the mattress will be broken down into pieces where the springs can be metal down for metal and the synthetic fabrics can be used in the production of carpet underlay or converted into energy when sent to a plant.
